What is Ear Wax and why do we have it?

Ear wax, medically referred to as cerumen, is produced by glands in the ear canal. Its purpose is to trap dust, debris and other small particles and prevent them from reaching and potentially damaging the ear drum. In most cases, the wax dries up and falls out of the ear along with any trapped dust or debris without our awareness.

The amount of ear wax produced by the ear varies from person to person. A blockage or impaction of earwax occurs when the wax gets pushed deep within the ear canal.

Trapped ear wax can have a negative impact on your hearing. O’Grady’s ear wax removal Ireland services are here to help assess for, and manage, ear wax build-up. Read below about some of the ways we safely and effectively remove ear wax.

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal Dublin

In our head office in Blanchardstown, we provide safe and effective ear wax removal using the Endoscopic Microsuction. With microsuction, an endoscope is used to see into the ear, and a medical suction device is used to suck out the wax.

Microsuction ear wax removal Dublin is accepted across the medical profession as the safest and most comfortable method of earwax removal. With no liquids being used there is no fuss or mess during the procedure.

The fact that the ear canal is being observed throughout the process, makes it an exceptionally safe procedure. It is also a comfortable process and it is usually undertaken in a few minutes.

Ear Irrigation Vs. Ear Syringing Dublin

Using the Propulse Ear Irrigation System, your Audiologist at O’Grady’s can help you to remove excess earwax with ear irrigation. This procedure involves using warm water to flush the wax from the ears. This safe method helps to minimise the risk of damage to the ear. Ear wax removal by Ear Irrigation has replaced Ear Syringing as it is more safer and reliable due to its controlled flow of  water

Ear irrigation is not suitable if you have an active ear infection or if you have damage or perforation to the ear drum.

Speak to O’Grady’s today to see if ear irrigation is the solution to your wax build-up!

COMMON CAUSES

The most common cause of ear wax build up is the use of cotton buds in the ear canal which pushes the wax deeper into the ear canal. Hearing aid and earplug users are also more prone to earwax blockage.

EARWAX BLOCKAGE OR A BUILD UP OF EAR WAX CAN BE ASSOCIATED WITH A NUMBER OF SYMPTOMS INCLUDING:

  • Unexplained Hearing Loss
  • Plugged or fullness sensation in the ear
  • Ringing in the ears or Tinnitus
  • Feedback or whistling when a hearing aid is being worn
  • The hearing aid being repeatedly blocked up with ear wax

EAR WAX REMOVAL CLINIC DUBLIN & ACROSS IRELAND

Ear wax should only removed if the above symptoms are noted. It is normal for our ears to contain some amount of wax.

Ear wax drops, microscopic ear irrigation and microsuction of ear wax are the primary forms of removing ear wax. Sometimes, methods used to remove wax are used in combination (e.g. ear drops prior to ear irrigation).

EARWAX BLOCKAGE OR A BUILD UP OF EAR WAX CAN BE ASSOCIATED WITH A NUMBER OF SYMPTOMS INCLUDING:

  • Ear drops help in the treatment of wax, although no one particular type of ear drops could be said to be better than another.
  • Ear irrigation is more effective if ear drops are used beforehand, but this method is not suitable if there is a perforation in the ear drum.
  • Ear irrigation performed by an appropriately qualified professional is better and much safer than an individual performing it themselves.
  • Endoscopic removal of wax is more comfortable, quicker and easier to perform than microscopic removal of wax.
